A discussion panel on the Euphrates River geographically and historically

The Human Resources Development Department at the Upper Euphrates Centre for Sustainable Development Research at University of Anbar held a scientific discussion session titled: "Geography and History Met in One River" (the Euphrates ... The River of Civilizations), with contributions from (Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Taha Yasseen) and (Assistant Professor Solaf Taha Dawood), on Tuesday, 3/6/2025, in the main hall of the center. The discussion targeted researchers, academics, and specialists in the study of the Euphrates River from all its aspects and the study of the Upper Euphrates regions.

The first lecture was presented by Dr. Ahmed Taha Yasseen in the discussion panel, which covered the historical aspects of the Euphrates River. Among the most important topics he addressed were the origin of the name "Euphrates" in ancient and modern historical sources, and the regions and cities the Euphrates River passes through, from its entry into Iraqi territory in the city of Al-Qaim to its mouth in the Arabian Gulf. He then moved on to the ancient and modern divisions of the Euphrates River, detailing all the tributaries and branches that the river encounters from its source to its mouth. Finally, the sources relied upon in delivering this lecture were mentioned.

The second lecture, presented by Assistant Professor Solaf Taha Daoud, addressed the geographical aspects of the Euphrates River. The most important aspects of her lecture included a brief introduction to the river, including its geographical location, geological characteristics, sedimentation and sediment transport, tectonic factors, natural hazards, the river's course and gradient, its detailed length, tributaries and water network, its climate and water supply, and a discussion of the dams and major water projects built on it. The lecture also addressed environmental and political challenges, with a detailed analysis of the historical, political, and legal dimensions of the Turkish-Syrian-Iraqi conflict over the waters of the Euphrates River. It also included predictions of the future of the Euphrates River in light of climate change: challenges and potential scenarios, along with a scientific analysis of the river's future based on the latest studies. Finally, it addressed proposed solutions for managing the Euphrates River water crisis.

This discussion session is part of a series of scientific events organized by the Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research to serve researchers, specialists, and graduate students. The Center affirms its commitment to continuing to organize such events, which contribute to developing researchers' skills and raising the level of scientific research in accordance with precise scientific standards.
