A Weather conditions in Iraq for the coming days

The Climatology Department at the Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research declares a report on satellite observations of the current heat wave.

Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Jassam Mukhlef, climate expert and satellite meteorologist at the Center, explained the continuation of the heat wave that Iraq is experiencing, according to the following data :

Synoptic analysis:

GFS model at 500 mb indicates warmer and more stable air over Iraq due to the presence of a mid -level ridge. The contour lines show a height of about 588 decametres over Iraq, which means that the country is under the influence of a warm and dry air mass. This type of system hinders the development of convection, which helps the development of a heat dome, especially in the Center and south, starting from Tuesday, July 22, 2025. What often happens is that the weather will be hotter than average in the lower layers of the atmosphere.

Temperatures:

It is expected that temperatures will remain high for the next (10) days and the peak of the heat wave will begin on July 22-23,2025  during the day, and the period 24-29/7/2025 will be an evolution of the peak of the heat wave and a global warming - until the night the temperatures will be high - as a result of weak in the surface layers, especially in the central region and the southern region, which are more extreme in temperatures, as is clear from the thermal curve :

Ultraviolet rays (UV):

It is expected that during the next (7) days the highest level of ultraviolet rays will be on Monday, July 21,2025, reaching its highest degrees in the far western part of Iraq, its limits are (10) in the Index  and its levels decrease towards the east of the country, reaching (6) in the Index . It is also unhealthy high despite its low values in the country (and it is recommended during the peak period (12-2 pm) to avoid exposure to its rays - except when necessary and with light clothing that covers the body and has light colors).

Winds:

In terms of direction, it will be westerly to north-westerly, while in terms of speed, it will be moderate (30 to 45), except for Monday, July 222025, when it will reach (50) km/hour in Basra.

Dusty condition:

Dust is expected to pick up in the early hours of Saturday night and Sunday night due to temperature differences, which will cause winds to pick up and cause dust to blow in from the Syrian desert. Its impact will be south of Mosul, Tikrit and northeast of Anbar, and its impact will diminish during the day.
