A research team from the Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research at the University of Anbar, in collaboration with researchers from the College of Engineering, the Renewable Energy Research Center, the Department of Scientific Affairs, the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity, and INTI International University in Malaysia, has published a research paper in the (International Journal of Energy Production and Management), which is indexed in Scopus (Q2) (site score = 2.8).

This research explores the potential of utilizing existing regulators on the Euphrates River in Anbar Governorate to generate clean and inexpensive electricity. This aligns with the seventh Sustainable Development Goal (clean and affordable energy for all) and is consistent with the university and center's strategic plans for achieving these goals. A physical model, in addition to a numerical model, was used to test several scenarios and different operating conditions based on hydrological data for the Euphrates River, including its flow and water levels. The above models were applied to what are known as small-scale power plants with Archimedes axial turbines. This type of plant does not require a large storage capacity or high flow rates, which is suitable for the current state of the Euphrates River. Furthermore, the presence and operation of the regulators makes electricity generation a byproduct at very low costs, providing clean energy with minimal maintenance. The results showed that the Ramadi and Fallujah regulators are ideal and feasible for this type of plant, presenting an excellent opportunity for investment in this field. The center expressed its readiness to explain the results of this research to the decision-makers in the governorate and the Ministry of Electricity in order to adopt and invest in this research and put it into practice in a way that achieves the benefit of the research in service of the public interest.
