A Scientific Course Entitled: Fundamentals of Rigorous Scientific Research

As part of the ongoing scientific activities of the Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research/Human Resources Development Department, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Center at the University of Anbar, which has been holding various scientific courses and events in previous years, the lectures of the free training course entitled: (Fundamentals of Rigorous Scientific Research) concluded on Tuesday, February 3, 2026. The course lasted for three days and was held in the main hall of the center.

The first lecture, presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Omar Yaseen Neda, addressed the "research gap," which is considered an area or problem that has not been adequately covered in previous studies, or has not yet been addressed from a new perspective. This gap appears when there is a lack of information, inconsistency in results, absence of practical application, or a change in reality that research has not yet kept pace with. Identifying the research gap is a fundamental step. Because it justifies the importance of the study and clarifies the scientific contribution the research will make.

The second lecture, presented by Dr. Haitham Abdul Mohsen Afen, reviewed the mechanisms for using Journal Finder tools to help researcher select reputable international journals that accurately match the title and abstract of their research. The lecture also covered practical steps for distinguishing between free (subscription) and paid (open access) publishing, emphasizing the necessity of verifying the journal's "aims and scope" to ensure the research's acceptance and its use for academic promotions. The lecture concluded by explaining how to use artificial intelligence techniques to find publication fees and details about journals, providing researchers with a concise guide to avoid common mistakes and save time in the scientific publishing process.

Finally, the third lecture, presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Taha Yaseen, addressed "Scientific Research Methods." It included an introduction to scientific research methodologies, followed by a detailed discussion of several key topics, including: (the philosophy of the scientific method; a review of scientific research methodologies and the appropriate tools for each discipline; types of scientific research methodologies; the characteristics that should be present in a scientific research methodology; a comprehensive definition of all types of scientific research methodologies; the correct scientific steps in following scientific research methodologies; how to benefit from scientific research methodologies; the ethics of scientific research and artificial intelligence; and finally, a summary of some of the lecture's conclusions).

The session was attended by researchers from the center and a number of faculty members and researchers, headed by Professor Dr. Wissam Hashem Khaleel, Assistant President of the University for Scientific Affairs, Professor Dr. Qutaiba Farhan Dawood, Director of the Department of Scientific Affairs at the University Presidency, and Professor Dr. Ammar Hatem Kamel, Director of the Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research. The session included some questions on different topics that were presented, and concluded with a test for all participants.
