The Upper Euphrates Center organizes a workshop on artificial intelligence applications in water resources engineering
2026-04-02
The Human Resources Development Department at the Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Center at the University Presidency, organized a scientific workshop in the center's hall entitled: "Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Water Resources Engineering." The workshop was held on Sunday, March 29, 2026, in the center's main hall, and was presented by Dr. Mohammed Majeed Hameed and Dr. Haitham Abdul Mohsen Afen.
The workshop aimed to highlight the role of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, particularly machine learning and deep learning, in the sustainable management of water resources and understanding the complex and changing dynamics of water.
The workshop included discussions on several key topics, including the use of AI in predicting river flow and floods, drought analysis, water quality modeling, and improving the operation of dams and reservoirs. The steps involved in building engineering models were also reviewed, from defining objectives and processing data to evaluation and final implementation.
Researchers discussed the significant advantages offered by these modern technologies, along with the challenges posed by the need for high-quality historical data and the difficulty in interpreting some complex models. The workshop also addressed future trends in hybrid models that integrate AI with physical equations to develop smart and sustainable water systems.
In conclusion, the workshop emphasized that AI is a complementary and supportive analytical tool for decision-making and that it operates most effectively when combined with engineering understanding and hydrological science. A discussion was then opened for attendees to exchange ideas on how to leverage these technologies and apply them practically in specialized engineering projects.
