(For the first time in 46 years) Measuring flood discharges for several valleys in the western region

The staff of the terminal station in Haditha were able to measure the runoff discharges for several valleys of the western region, the valleys are (Hajlan, Zaghdan, Banat Al-Hassan and Horan), which is the first time that the discharge of runoffs in the valleys of the western region is estimated since the measurements made by the Yugoslav company in the 1975/1976 season, and based on which small dam projects were proposed on the valleys, which were implemented after that date in an important achievement achieved for the University of Anbar and the Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre with the efforts of the terminal personnel in Haditha.

Engineer Juma’a Mohammed Ahmed, the station official head, stated that water levels and discharges were monitored and estimated in the valleys of Hajlan, Zaghdan, Banat Al-Hassan and Houran (near the intersection of the valley with a Ramadi-Haditha road) on 25-11-2022 by moving between the runoff paths in the four valleys and monitoring the measurement points that were established more than a month ago in preparation for the rainy season, as the measurement and monitoring operations continued for five hours in light of rainy weather and difficulty in movement, but the keenness to invest this precious opportunity to build reliable Data based on actual field measurements was the motivation for accomplishing this task.

These measurements can help in updating the data on estimating the volume of water revenues of the valleys, which are based on theoretical foundations only because there are no actual practical measurements, as we have indicated that the only available measurement is for the 1975/1976 season, These measurements would also help postgraduate students in estimating and knowing the appropriateness and conformity of the use of hydrological models applied to estimate the relationship of rainfall - surface runoff to the valleys of the region, which represents an important and great achievement for the University of Anbar, which emphasized a lot on supporting and activating the terminal station in Haditha and the Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre with all its staff, especially the employees of Haditha terminal station.

Detailed reports will be prepared on the discharges and their locations, in addition to data for the most important valleys in which runoff rains occurred and the amounts of rainfall recorded to update the databases, which postgraduate students and researchers can view through the Planning and Databases Department at the Centre.
