The rainwater harvesting system in the UEBDC succeeds in storing a quantity of rain

As part of its strategic plan to achieve the goals of sustainable development, especially those related to water resources, development and preservation, the University of Anbar adopted the establishment of rainwater harvesting systems attached to buildings, while obliging the Department of Construction and Projects to include statements and specifications of new buildings systems for harvesting rainwater and benefiting from it in irrigation and expanding green spaces within the university.

Researchers from the Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre, in cooperation with the Department of Construction and Projects, designed these systems, a number of which were implemented in the university buildings, including the building of the Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre and the Centre for Renewable Energy Studies.

The system succeeded in building the centre by harvesting and collecting 86 cubic meters of rainwater that fell on the region on March 25-26, 2023, amounting to 53 mm depth, which means the success of the system and with high efficiency.  To know what the number 86 cubic meters means? and how important it is, we point out that the need per capita of water according to international specifications is 300 liters of water per day, and for a family of five people, we need 1.5 cubic meters, which means that collecting 86 cubic meters of water can cover the need of a family of five people for 58 days, which indicates the importance of developing ideas and projects for benefiting from rainwater, especially for irrigating crops and green areas.

Samples of the collected water were taken by the laboratory unit in the centre for the purpose of testing and evaluating its quality for various uses and providing a database of rainwater quality and excellence for researchers and postgraduate students.
