Satellite images monitor large losses of water storage of small dams in the western region

In continuation of the space monitoring of water storage and water imports for water harvesting projects and small dams in the western region for the purpose of evaluating their storage efficiency and great strategic importance under water scarcity conditions and providing important detailed data for researchers, graduate students and those interested in supporting studies and research on these projects, the Planning and Databases Department at the Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre announced a new set of satellite images of a group of these dams for the period from April 1 to April 30, 2023.

Dr. Haitham Abdul Mohsen Afn, space monitoring employee at the UEBDC, said that the problem of losses in the water storage has emerged more clearly than last month in the Shabija Dam, where it lost about 50% of its water storage during the month of April, and the pictures of the interval between two and three days showed a significant decrease, which indicates a leakage problem due to the presence of (sink hole). while the rest of the dams there was a loss of storage due to evaporation, especially with the arrival of temperatures to the thirties and recording wind speeds of more than (6 meters per second) and the dams of Al-Rahalia and um Al-Tarfat recorded the largest decrease, while the dams of Rutba and Horan were the lowest, where temperatures are lower and also their levels above sea level are higher than the rest.

The above conclusions point to the need to preserve water storage by directing research to reduce the impact of evaporation and using international experiences in this field.
