Data of runoff and rains events in the valleys of the western region

The Planning and Databases Department at the Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre - University of Anbar announced the amount of the wave of floods and rains events in the valleys and dams of the western region of Iraq on 26-10-2023.

The satellite data indicated that the dams of Al-Agri, Al-Rutba, Shabija and Ga’ara/4 have received good amounts of runoff water in their reservoirs as a result of the rain wave on November 25 and 26, 2023, which heralds a good season hopefully which corresponds to previous expectations by experts and referred to by the department in previous bulletins.

On the other hand, Engineer Ahmed Ismail from the Planning and Databases Department indicated that Tabul valley received on 26-10-2023 very good quantities of water, and these floods were monitored and documented video, and this is the second year in a row in which Tabul valley witnesses large runoff events, which indicates the importance of this valley and the need to establish a dam to harvest water in it, as there is no dam built on this valley.

As a result of the absence of weather measurement stations in the region except for the Rutba station, the amounts of rain that fell were not known, and the station recorded only drops, while the rain was mostly in the upper Horan and in the area of Al-Ga'ara and Upper Tabl valley near the Saudi border. It is worth mentioning that the peronnel of the University of Anbar from the College of Engineering and the Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre supervised the implementation of the Ga’ara/4 Dam.

The Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre has stressed on more than one occasion the need for meteorology in this region, and we appeal again on this subject by installing a meteorological station in the Trebil area and another at the Arar port, which will integrate the existing stations and provide very important databases for various hydrological studies and researchers in the field of water harvesting, water resources engineering and geo climatic as well as postgraduate students in these fields.
