Satellite images monitor the formation of floods in the valleys of the western region

The Planning and Databases Department at the Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre - University of Anbar declared recent satellite images of the European Space Agency to form runoff events and collect them in a number of dams in the western region, namely (Al-Aghri Dams, Al-Ga'ara Dam 4, Horan Dam 2 and Shabija Dam). Images taken in October show that these dams receive good water quantities for the second year in a row, with the great potential of remote sensing techniques in flood tracking and developing rainfall-runoff models, especially in remote areas of the western region of Iraq.

The department stated that these images and data are part of the preparations to monitor the rainy season for this year and the use of these satellite images to monitor runoff waves and floods in the valleys of the western region and provides very important data for the development of the region through the investment of these dams and for various purposes with the presence of studies, including studies of the Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre with the possibility of agricultural and tourism investment and the possibility of establishing natural reserves in the region.

The images show the accumulation of floods in the dam basins during the rain wave on October (25 and 26) with mud deposits in large quantities, as the videos showed the arrival of storage levels in the Ga'ara Dam (its storage capacity of about four million cubic meters) Excellent storage levels and the passage of water to the bottom of the valley, in addition to the availability of good storage in the Agri Dam (storage capacity of 6 million cubic meters), Horan 2 Dam (storage capacity of 5 million cubic meters) and the Shabija Dam (storage capacity of 6 million cubic meters).

According to expectations of experts and researchers at the Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre at University of Anbar predict that the rain line is moving towards the south and southwest, which requires intensifying research efforts to study the valleys of (Al-Ghadaf, Al-Abayd and Tabal) and the establishment of dams for water harvesting within the basins of these valleys.
