2025-12-14
The Natural Resources Development Department at the Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research – University of Anbar held a scientific symposium entitled "Natural Resources in Anbar Governorate: Reality, Challenges, and Prospects for Development" in the conference hall at the Desert Studies Center on Sunday, December 14, 2025.
The symposium was attended by the President of the University of Anbar, Professor Dr. Mushtak Talib Al-Neda, along with a number of college members and specialists from the university, as well as representatives from relevant departments in Anbar Governorate.
The symposium opened with a speech by Dr. Saad Jabbar Hafi, Head of the Natural Resources Development Department at the Center, who welcomed the attendees and emphasized the importance of highlighting the province's natural resources as a fundamental pillar for achieving sustainable development. The symposium included four scientific lectures, as follows:
The first lecture, delivered by Professor Dr. Abed Saleh Fayyad, a retired professor from the College of Science at University of Anbar, discussed the most prominent raw materials and minerals available in Anbar province and the potential for investing in them to support the industrial, energy, and oil sectors. He stressed that these resources represent a strategic asset and an important foundation for development projects in the province.
The second lecture, presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Basim Fadhil Latif, a college member at the College of Science at University of Anbar, reviewed the locations of oil and gas deposits in the province and the available opportunities for their exploitation. He compared the size of these resources with those available in neighboring countries, indicating that statistics show Anbar province's superiority in this field, which enhances opportunities for development and economic growth.
The third lecture, delivered by Dr. Arkan Ali Mohammed, representing the Anbar Agriculture Directorate, addressed the current state of the agricultural and livestock sectors in the province and their role as vital natural resources that can contribute to development and job creation, particularly given the significant agricultural sector's contribution to the Iraqi labor market.
The fourth lecture, presented by Professor Dr. Ammar Hatem Kamel, Director of the Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research, discussed ways to utilize rainfall as a crucial national resource to compensate for the reduced flow in the Euphrates River. This reduction is attributed to climate change and decreased water releases from dams built on the river in upstream countries. He also noted that western Anbar province contains several valleys that receive substantial amounts of water annually, which can be utilized to support agriculture and improve the environment, thus contributing to the achievement of sustainable development goals.
At the conclusion of the seminar, a set of practical recommendations was agreed upon, and certificates of appreciation were distributed to the lecturers in recognition of their scholarly contributions.
