The digital revolution in the fields of artificial intelligence, from big data analysis to other areas, has contributed to fundamental transformations across various development sectors. These transformations range from water and energy resource management to sustainable urban planning and improved quality of life. These innovations are effective tools for decision-making, increasing production efficiency, and reducing waste, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals, which aim to achieve equity between current and future generations.

Employing technological innovation to support sustainable development paths is of paramount scientific and practical importance. It represents a strategic approach to enhancing the capacity to address development challenges and achieve comprehensive and sustainable development. The modern vision of development encompasses more than just economic growth; it includes economic growth coupled with changes in the structure of the economy and the economic and social system.

The Role of Technology in Supporting Sustainable Development:

Sustainable development is a comprehensive framework that aims to achieve a delicate balance between economic growth, social justice, and environmental preservation. This ensures that the needs of the present are met without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Given the complexity of development challenges and the interconnectedness of their spatial dimensions, the importance of employing modern tools that contribute to the accurate analysis and understanding of these phenomena has become paramount. Foremost among these tools are Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing.

These technologies are essential for achieving resource efficiency, as they assist decision-makers in formulating development plans based on accurate and up-to-date data. This reduces randomness and enhances the opportunities for achieving sustainability. Therefore, the integration of sustainable development with GIS and remote sensing represents a modern trend in geographical and developmental studies. It contributes to building more accurate and flexible planning models capable of addressing environmental, economic, and social challenges in a scientific and systematic manner.

The use of technology contributes significantly to achieving sustainable development in all its aspects, given its active role in improving agricultural, industrial, and service production processes. Technology is defined as the organized effort aimed at utilizing the results of scientific research to develop methods and techniques for production processes on a broad scale. Technological knowledge can be applied in the following areas:

  1. The Role of Remote Sensing in Achieving Sustainable Development:

Remote sensing is defined as a science and art that aims to obtain information about a phenomenon in a specific area through data sensed by a device that does not physically touch the phenomenon. Its capabilities are demonstrated by providing information about the Earth through aerial images and satellite imagery, which helps in studying Earth's surface phenomena and resources. The importance of this technology in the fields of planning and sustainable development can be summarized as follows:

  • Identifying rapidly moving and changing phenomena that are difficult to observe with the naked eye, such as transportation and traffic.
  • Determining the spatial distribution of natural phenomena and human activities through ground-based monitoring.
  • Permanently recording phenomena and activities in a way that allows for their study in a desk-based format instead of field studies.
  • Helping in the production of maps necessary for various planning purposes. 2- The Role of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in Achieving Sustainable Development:

Sustainable development is closely linked to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) through their vital role in supporting planning and decision-making processes. The Institute of Environmental Systems Research defines GIS as: a package of computers, software, information, and specialists designed to store, update, and analyze terrestrial data using statistical, quantitative, and cartographic methods with a geographical focus. Due to its advantages and scientific capabilities, this technology has been used in the fields of planning, managing natural terrestrial resources, and urban land-use planning to achieve several objectives, the most important of which are:

• Analyzing the spatial distribution of natural resources such as water and agricultural land.

• Identifying areas most vulnerable to environmental hazards such as desertification and flooding.

• Supporting sustainable urban planning by guiding urban expansion in a balanced manner.

• Improving the efficiency of managing services such as transportation, energy, and waste. Finally, employing technological innovation to support sustainable development paths by protecting agricultural land, renewing urban areas and the old transportation network, enhancing the efficiency of public service networks and infrastructure, and reducing unplanned urban and random expansion, also on the other hand, is protecting the cultural heritage of urban areas and achieving the principle of equality in the distribution of social services. Also, the process of planning and managing sustainable development requires a geographic information system based on a three-dimensional database, meaning that it includes the environmental, economic and social dimensions.
