Upper Euphrates Centre for Sustainable Development Research - University of Anbar
Sustainable development is defined as a process to advance society towards a better life by making the best possible use of the resources of society, and developing cities, companies and lands, with the aim of developing society in all its social, economic, political and cultural aspects commensurate with its needs and capabilities, in order to reach its well-being, development and improvement of its general situation.
From this standpoint, the Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research at the University of Anbar has sought since its establishment to achieve the goals of sustainable development, by developing scientific departments (Human Resources Development Department, Natural Resources Development Department, Planning and Databases Department) that simulate the requirements of sustainable development, enhanced by specialized laboratories that have become highly efficient because of their highly experienced researchers and advanced scientific devices through which they can analyse most of the materials needed by researchers and graduate students from inside and outside the university. In addition to focusing on scientific research in various fields such as the use of clean energy and afforestation by expanding green spaces, preparing databases for various sectors, as well as developing scientific research methods that support renewable energy, such as solar, wind and hydropower, in order to address environmental challenges, The centre also encourages research on clean technology, which contributes to finding innovative solutions to air pollution problems by promoting biodiversity, especially since the world is still suffocated by the use of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas), and although wind and solar energy alone can provide thousands of times what the whole planet needs from energy, it is still burning fossil fuels, which pollute the air and cause global warming, which is the responsibility of everyone, as It is estimated that a few million people die each year as a result of diseases caused by air pollution.
The centre did not stop to this extent, but sought to achieve everything commensurate with the achievement of sustainable development goals, so it recently modified the name of the centre from (Upper Euphrates Basin Development Centre) to (Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research) to be in line with the name of the new center with the vision, mission and goals that it seeks to achieve, and even created two other sections, namely (Environment and Pollution Department and Climatic Meteorology Department) to increase the number of sections in the centre to five departments.
Based on what has been mentioned, the Center has started working on concluding cooperation and partnership mechanisms with local and international institutions by promoting the exchange of knowledge and experiences in the fields of sustainability, thus contributing to building a sustainable future aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in various aspects, and contributing to protecting the environment and achieving comprehensive development. Accordingly, the researcher recommends the following:
· Develop far-reaching policies to improve inclusive development indicators, mainly health, education, housing and the environment.
· Integrating sustainable development indicators into educational systems to enable educational and student bodies to be active partners in the formulation of development policies.
· Activating state institutions, including media and civil society, to remove all obstacles that would hinder the progress of the development process.
