Polar air and very cold weather ... Forecast for the coming days

The Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research announced on Sunday, 23/2/2025, a report on the weather situation in Iraq. Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Jassam Mekhlif, a climate meteorologist in the Department of Climate Meteorology at the Center, according to satellite meteorology, stated the following:

Temperature status:

A severe drop in temperatures for the next 4 days, starting from Sunday, 23/2/2025, as a result of the country's exposure to the descent of very cold polar air deep into the upper layers of the atmosphere, and the effect of pumping cold air lasts for five days, temperatures in the west of the country drop between (-6 degrees Celsius in Akashat and -1 degree Celsius in Fallujah) for Anbar province.

As for the northern region, temperatures range between (-19 degrees Celsius in Dohuk to -5 degrees Celsius in Mosul) with continued snowfall, especially in the highland areas.

As for the southern region, it ranges from (-2 degrees Celsius in Diwaniyah to 2 degrees Celsius in Basra).

By applying Tom's equation to calculate thermal comfort in this atmosphere for Anbar province, the results of the equation range from (2 to 4.8), such a result falls within the limits of very cold weather, in which outdoor activities should be reduced, especially for primary school students, it is often recommended to reduce the period of time that students spend in school, especially when it comes to primary school students aged (6 to 15 years) as they may have difficulty tolerating the long cold periods especially in open school environments.

The phenomenon of frost is during the night periods and the necessary precautions must be taken by heating and drinking warm liquids wearing winter clothes and for farmers not to irrigate crops during this wave and keep animals warm.
