Iraq is on the verge of a scorching heatwave with temperatures approaching 50 degrees Celsius
2025-06-10
The Climate and Meteorology Department at the Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research at Al-Anbar University announced the expected weather conditions for the coming days, indicating that Iraq will be exposed to a scorching heatwave with temperatures reaching 50 degrees Celsius. The details of this wave are as follows:
- Temperature:
The rise in temperatures will continue over the next 10 days according to the GFS and ECMWF model data, reaching 45°C, and is expected to peak on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This is attributed to factors such as the presence of a subtropical jet stream at the 250-millibar level, which contributes to the deepening of surface thermal conditions, atmospheric stability, clear skies, and the length of daylight—all of which help increase thermal gain. As a result, Iraq is expected to experience a scorching heatwave—above its normal levels—reaching 50°C in the central and southern regions. In the western and northern areas of the country, the maximum temperature will be between 38 to 43°C, as shown in the temperature curve.
- Ultraviolet (UV) rays:
In general, its peak levels are daily at 12 noon in the summer of Iraq, and during this week, they reach their limits (7 to 11) on the Index, which is unhealthy (it is advised to avoid exposure to its rays during peak hours—except for necessity and while wearing light clothing that covers the body and in light colours).
- Wind:
In terms of direction: Starting Wednesday, the wind direction will change to southeast to south, bringing with it the characteristics of the hot region, oppressive humidity in Basra, and heat and dryness in other parts of the country.
As for the speed: it ranges between 35 – 40 km/h in the central and northern regions, and in the southern region 40 – 50 km/h by the end of the week, which helps stir up dust and sand.
