A slight drop in temperatures and a moderation in ultraviolet radiation levels
2025-06-16
The Upper Euphrates Centre for Sustainable Development Research at the University of Anbar announced the weather forecasts for the coming days. Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Jassem Makhlouf, head of the satellite meteorology lab in the Climate Monitoring Department at the centre, mentioned today, 15/6/2025, that satellite images indicate the following:
Temperature:
A relative decrease in temperatures is expected starting Monday in the northern and central regions due to an increase in the Rossby wave pattern at the 500-millibar pressure level and Iraq being under the rising arm of the trough. This has helped attract a moderately warm air mass that contributes to a relative decrease in temperature. Its effect will be evident in the central and northern regions first, and then on Tuesday, its impact will reach southern Iraq. The temperature may drop by (5 to 6) degrees Celsius, and then it will gradually raise again on Friday, June 20, 2025 as shown in the temperature curve.
Ultra violet ray (UV):
In general, its levels are lower than they used to be, reaching between 6 to 11 on the Index, and it is also unhealthy (it is advised to avoid exposure to its rays during peak hours from 12 to 2 PM unless necessary, and to wear light clothing that covers the body and is of light colors).
Wind:
In terms of direction: Starting from tomorrow, Monday, the wind direction will change to become westerly to north-westerly, bringing with it the characteristics of the region it originates from, as it will be cooler and help moderate the air temperature relatively.
As for the speed: it ranges between 22 – 39 km/h in the western region of the country.
While it ranges between 25 – 48 km/h in the central region.
While it ranges between 35 – 50 km/h in the northern region.
In the southern region, winds of 40-50 km/h over the weekend will help stir up dust and sand, and wind speeds will increase as one moves further south, with expectations that they will reach 60 km/h on Thursday, June 19, 2025.
Dusty storms case:
It is expected that dust conditions will become active due to the arrival of a relatively cold air mass to Iraq starting tomorrow (Monday) in the western and hilly areas (north of Anbar, Mosul, and Tikrit). Its impact will increase on Thursday in southern Iraq (specifically Nasiriyah and Basra) due to increased wind activity.
