Gradual rise in temperatures is expected and fifty-degree weather in southern Iraq at the beginning of next week

The Meteorological Department at the Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research - University of Anbar announced the weather forecasts for the upcoming week through satellite imagery. Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Jassem Mukhalaf, a climate expert at the center and in charge of meteorological observations, explained that there will be a gradual increase in temperatures with some wind and dust activity as follows:

Temperatures:
It is expected, according to the European model ECMWF, a gradual rise in temperatures starting from Tuesday, 8/7/2025, for the next 10 days, with temperatures reaching:

Central region:

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (47 to 48) °C.

The northern region:

Saturday, Sunday, and Monday (46 to 47)°C.

Southern region:

From Wednesday, 9/7 to Friday, 18/7/2025, temperatures will range between 47 to 50 degrees Celsius.

Western region:

Temperatures will remain “between” (39 to 41) °C over the next ten days.

The rise in temperatures is attributed to the displacement of the upper cold trough from the country, replaced by a ridge at the 500-millibar pressure level, in addition to the continued heat gain due to the long day and short night and clear skies. All these factors contribute to increased heating, as shown in the thermal curve.

Ultraviolet (UV) rays:

It is expected that in the coming period, there will be a slight decrease in the level of ultraviolet radiation across the country. The highest levels will be in the extreme western part of Iraq, reaching (10) on the Index, while the lowest levels will be in the eastern parts of Anbar, the capital Baghdad, Najaf, and Karbala, reaching (6) on the Index. It is also unhealthily high despite its low values in the country (it is advised to avoid exposure to its rays during peak hours (12-2 PM) unless necessary, and to wear light clothing that covers the body and is of light colors).

The winds:

In terms of direction, it is from the west to the northwest, while in terms of speed, it is moderate (35 to 48) except on Friday, 18/7/2025, when it reaches (50) km/h in the central and southern regions.

Dusty conditions:

It is expected that dust conditions will intensify at the beginning of Wednesday due to the presence of a surface low over the Arabian Gulf, causing winds to pick up and stir up dust coming from the Syrian Desert. The affected areas will be south of Mosul, Tikrit, eastern Anbar, Karbala, and Najaf, with the impact subsiding in the evening only in Mosul.3
