Clarification regarding the current heatwave
2025-07-14
The Meteorological Department at the Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research announced a clarification regarding the current heatwave. Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Jassem Makhlouf, a climate expert and satellite meteorology officer at the center, stated that the heat dome in Iraq: a continuous rise in atmospheric heating is pushing the country towards an unprecedented climatic peak.
The data in the figure presents a list of the highest recorded temperatures over a 24-hour period on July 14, 2025, at 11:00 UTC (2:00 PM local time in Iraq) among 8,600 stations worldwide, displaying the top 30 stations. The result shows a remarkable level of thermal extremity in the regions of Iraq, followed by Iran, and then Kuwait, as follows:
1. Highest temperature:
50.7°C at Basra International Airport – a strong indicator of the intensification of the heatwave across all of Iraq, especially southern Iraq. 2. The majority of stations that recorded extreme temperatures in Iraq: 25 out of 30 stations worldwide are located in Iraq, indicating the concentration of the heat dome particularly in the country. • Distribution of temperatures:
1. Most values range between 50.7°C and 48.2°C, all of which fall within a range considered "dangerous" to public health, especially with direct exposure. 2. Major cities like Baghdad and Mosul recorded temperatures close to the upper limit, which means that the heatwave is not limited to desert areas but has extended to cities due to poor planning, lack of afforestation, and neglect of green areas.
