Weather forecast for the coming days

The Meteorological Department at the Euphrates River Center for Sustainable Development Research – University of Anbar, announced the weather forecast for the coming days in Iraq, where a dust wave is expected on Friday evening extending to southern Iraq, and a moderate temperature with the onset of the autumnal equinox. Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Jassem Makhlef, the satellite meteorology officer at the center, announced this, It is expected, that the country will be exposed to a dust wave on the afternoon of Friday, September 19, 2025, due to the difference in surface pressure between southern Iraq (a concentration of a surface thermal low of 1004 millibars) and the Syrian desert (an extension of a European high-pressure system with a pressure level of 1010 millibars). Winds will intensify as a moderate air mass moves toward Iraq, with its front stirring up dust from the Syrian Desert and carrying it along with the wind direction (northwest). As a result, the areas of northern Anbar, Mosul, Tikrit, and Kirkuk will be affected, and the area of impact will expand at nite to reach Sulaymaniyah (to the north), Baghdad, Hilla, Najaf, and Kut (to the south), with the effect gradually weakening, God willing, by Saturday afternoon, September 20, 2025.

Temperature:

It is expected the temperature trend for the next ten days will generally be moderate across the country, with a gradual decrease expected between September 20-25, followed by a slight increase and stabilization thereafter, especially with the onset of the autumn equinox on September 22. This marks an astronomical event each year when the sun begins to gradually move away from the northern hemisphere, signaling the arrival of winter, God willing.
The maximum and minimum temperatures in southern Iraq remain between 37 to 41 degrees Celsius due to the continuation of the hot, dry air mass (CT). In the northern and western parts of the country, the beginning of the influence of the moderate air mass coming from the northwest occurs, which leads to a moderation in daytime temperatures and a mild, cool night, reflecting the true autumnal climatic characteristics, as shown in the thermal curve.

Synoptic analysis:

High pressure levels indicate the descent of a trough at the 500 millibar pressure level, with the onset of autumn and the advance of moderate air masses to the region, and the retreat of the hot, dry air mass. This is expected to cause a surface disturbance that may lead to alternating dust waves of varying intensity, depending on the surface pressure levels.

Ultraviolet ray:

It is expected that during the next 10 days, there will be a decrease in the level of ultraviolet radiation in general compared to what it was previously in the summer season, with levels reaching 7 Index in the western part of the country, and decreasing to 5 Index in the eastern part of the country.
