Runoff Volume Statistics in Western Region Valleys Following Recent Rainfall

The Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research at University of Anbar announced runoff volume statistics in the valleys of the western region where the center's monitoring stations are located. According to the center's experts and researchers, the volume of runoff water from Horan valley towards the Euphrates River, as measured at the center's monitoring station on the Horan Bridge near the Ramadi-Haditha road, reached 9.54 million cubic meters. As for Zaghdan valley, the volume of runoff water measured at the center's monitoring station on the Zaghdan Bridge near the Ramadi-Haditha road was estimated at 639,000 cubic meters towards the Euphrates River. In Hajlan valley, which passes through the city of Haditha and flows into the Euphrates River, a volume of 1.24 million cubic meters was recorded towards the Euphrates River. Therefore, the total volume of runoff flowing into the Euphrates River from the three valleys mentioned above is 11.579 million cubic meters. Experts and researchers at the center believe that this water could be directed to support and sustain Lake Habbaniyah, improving its environment and thus, consequently, the environment of Anbar Governorate. The volume of runoff from these three valleys alone is equivalent to feeding the lake via the Al-Warrar regulator at a discharge rate of 20 cubic meters per second for a full week, which could significantly revitalize the lake. Therefore, based on the above, the Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research at the University of Anbar requests that the relevant officials in the governorate, those responsible for water resources management, and officials in the Ministry of Water Resources study the above proposal. The university is prepared to participate in discussions to contribute to the development of such proposals, thus strengthening cooperation with all governorate departments and other ministries in support of sustainable development plans and Iraq's Vision 2030. It is worth noting that the University of Anbar has adopted an ambitious program through the Upper Euphrates Center to build detailed databases for studying climate change in the governorate as part of its strategic plan to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and Vision 2030.
