The country's weather forecast for the next few days
2026-03-13
The Meteorology Department at the Upper Euphrates Development Center, University of Anbar, announced its weather forecasts based on satellite imagery. Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Jassam Mukhlif, head of satellite weather forecasting, stated that the latest updates to global weather prediction models indicate that Iraq's weather is expected to be unstable this week, as follows:
On Saturday, March 14, 2026, Iraq will be affected by the Khamsin depression, which originates in the deserts of Egypt and Libya. This is due to a cold air mass moving from Europe and colliding with warm desert air, carrying large quantities of dust and sand. Its impact on Iraq will begin on Saturday, entering from the west and stirring up a widespread and unusual dust storm, with a significant decrease in horizontal visibility. The weather will be relatively warm. (17–20°C in Baghdad and Basra) but dusty and unstable.
Potential risks: Necessary precautions must be taken as land and air travel will be difficult, and some flights may be canceled due to heavy dust. God knows best.
On Sunday, March 15, 2026, a Mediterranean low-pressure system (potential storm) will arrive. The center of the low will be over the eastern Mediterranean Sea, and the atmospheric pressure will deepen, reaching 998 hectopascals at its center. Iraq will be in the frontal part of the low, meaning that humid air will rise and strong condensation will occur. Therefore, thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected in most parts of the country, especially in the north and center, with the possibility of hail due to the large temperature difference between the upper atmosphere and the surface. As for the south of the country (Basra, Nasiriyah), the impact is expected to be limited to lighter rain but with humid winds.
Potential risks: Flash floods are expected in the north and center, local flooding, and disruptions to transportation and communication. God knows best. On Monday, March 16, 2026, following the storm, the low-pressure system will move eastward toward Iran, while its effects will linger over Iraq. Scattered rain will continue in the north and east of the country (Diyala, Sulaymaniyah, Erbil). Temperatures will drop significantly, potentially reaching 10°C in Baghdad and 8°C in Anbar. Dust will gradually subside, but humidity will persist.
Potential risks: Flash floods are expected to continue in mountainous areas, with visibility gradually improving.
