Staff at the Haditha Terminal Station Continue Monitoring and Recording Floods in the Western Region

The valleys of the western region of Anbar Governorate experienced a wave of flooding as a result of the rainfall on Sunday, March 15, 2026. Despite the challenging weather conditions and coinciding with the blessed month of Ramadan and the night of the 27th of Ramadan, the staff at Haditha Terminal Station continued their fieldwork late into the night, conducting hydrological measurements of floodwater flow in several major valleys in the region. In a statement, Engineer Juma’a Muhammad Ahmad, head of the Haditha Terminal Station, explained that the station's technical staff was mobilized to monitor the wave of rain and flash floods that swept through the region. Their aim was to record hydrological data on the flow of the valleys, which the center monitors as part of its environmental and climate monitoring program.
He indicated that despite the late hour and challenging weather conditions, the field monitoring teams were able to record the flow of flash floods in Houran valley at the center's monitoring station near the Ramadi-Haditha road. The flow reached 86 cubic meters per second at 11:00 PM on Sunday.
Flood flow was also recorded in Hajlan valley within the city of Haditha, reaching approximately 45 cubic meters per second at 11:00 PM that same day.
He added that the station staff continued monitoring on Monday morning, March 16, 2026, recording a flow of 30 cubic meters per second in Wadi Houran at 10:00 AM. This indicates that the flash flood wave is beginning to recede, although water continues to flow from the upper reaches of the valley. In the Hajlan valley area within the city of Haditha, the center's monitoring station recorded a discharge of 4.3 cubic meters per second during morning measurements.
It is worth noting that University of Anbar, as part of its strategic plan to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and Vision 2030, has adopted, through the Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research, a scientific program to monitor climate change in Anbar Governorate. This program includes the establishment of several climate and hydrological monitoring stations, in addition to the use of remote sensing technologies and satellite imagery. The aim is to build robust scientific databases that support researchers, specialists, and graduate students in conducting studies related to climate change, water resource management, and mitigating the effects of extreme hydrological phenomena.
