Latest Statistics on the Rainfall in Western Iraq Region
2026-03-21
The Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research at University of Anbar announced the latest statistics on the rainfall that affected western Iraq on March 15th and 16th, which contributed to significant water flow into the Euphrates River.
According to the center, calculations by its experts and researchers showed that the floods in Houran valley resulted in approximately 6,501,600 cubic meters of water flowing into the Euphrates River, that reflects the crucial role of seasonal valleys in supporting the province's water resources.
Hydrological estimates prepared by the center's team also indicated that flash floods in Hajlan valley, within the city of Haditha, contributed approximately 1,620,000 cubic meters of water to the Euphrates River, underscoring the importance of monitoring and scientifically documenting these natural phenomena.
It is worth mentioning that University of Anbar, through the Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research, adopted a scientific project in 2022 to monitor climate change and establish rainfall and flash flood monitoring stations in the valleys of western Iraq. This program is the first of its kind to record these hydrological events since 1976, contributing to the provision of accurate scientific databases that serve researchers and graduate students, and supporting studies related to water resources and climate change within the university's strategic plan to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and Vision 2030.
