The Director of Water Resources in Anbar comments on the Flood Statistics and Confirms the Data Matches the Estimates of the Upper Euphrates Center

Following up on the hydrological report published by the Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research at the University of Anbar regarding the flood statistics of March 15-16, the Director of Water Resources in Anbar, Engineer Jamal Awda Sameer, issued an official statement confirming the consistency of the directorate's data with the center's announcement regarding the volume of floodwater flowing into the Euphrates River.

Engineer Jamal Awda explained that the directorate's data, based on measurements from monitoring platforms and the volume of releases at the Haditha Dam and the Ramadi Barrage, indicates that the total volume of floodwater entering the Euphrates River during the two days of the flood reached approximately 10 million cubic meters. He also explained that the Directorate's experts estimated the average daily flow of flash floods from the valleys at approximately 60 cubic meters per second, equivalent to more than 10 million cubic meters over two days.

These estimates largely coincided with those announced by the Upper Euphrates Center, whose data indicated that Houran valley– the largest and most voluminous valley – and Hajlan valley in the city of Haditha recorded approximately 8 million cubic meters. The flash floods from other valleys in Heet and Al-Baghdadi combined to reach a total exceeding 10 million cubic meters.

Both sides affirmed that the close agreement in these figures reflects the accuracy of the hydrological measurements and data relied upon by both the Directorate of Water Resources and the Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research.

It is worth noting the ongoing scientific and technical cooperation between the Center and the Directorate of Water Resources in Anbar. Engineer Jamal Awda Samir serves on the Center's Board of Directors, which strengthens the partnership between Anbar University and government departments in the governorate to serve the requirements of sustainable development and efficient water resource management.
