Recording of Large Volumes of Floodwater Flowing into the Euphrates River as a Result of Recent Rainfall
2026-03-24
The Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research at University of Anbar declared the recording of large quantities of floodwater flowing into the Euphrates River as a result of the rainfall that affected the Upper Euphrates region and western Iraq on March 21 and 22, 2026.
Experts and researchers at the center explained that monitoring and measurement operations conducted by the center's stations showed that the volume of water flowing from Hajlan valley, at the measuring station (the terminal station in Haditha), reached 6,456,600 cubic meters.
In Zaghdan valley, at the center's measuring station on the Zaghdan Bridge near the Ramadi-Haditha road, a flow of 12,420,000 cubic meters of water into the Euphrates River was recorded. In Banat Al-Hassan valley, the volume of floodwater reached 469,404 cubic meters, while Houran valley, at the gauging station on the Houran Bridge near the Ramadi-Haditha road, recorded the highest volume, with the floodwater flow continuing for four days, reaching 21,859,200 cubic meters.
Thus, the total volume of water flowing from these valleys into the Euphrates River reached 41,205,204 cubic meters, a figure that reflects the intensity of the recent rainfall and its importance as a water resource that can be utilized.
The center noted that these quantities significantly exceed those recorded in previous statistics dated December 12, 2025, in which the center's experts suggested the possibility of utilizing such rainfall and floods to support the water reserves in Lake Habbaniyah.
In this context, the center's experts and researchers reiterated their call to the relevant authorities in the Ministry of Water Resources and Governorate of Anbar to adopt effective measures to utilize floodwater, expressing the center's readiness to provide scientific and technical support in this field. University of Anbar, through its Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research, expressed its gratitude to the Anbar Governorate and the Directorate of Water Resources for their decision to augment the water reserves in Lake Habbaniyah by releasing water through the Al-Warar Barrage following the recent floods. This will have a positive impact on improving the lake's environment and water quality, and aligns with proposals previously submitted by the Center.
