Climate Variation in Iraq at the Beginning of April: A Spring Transition between Northern Lows and Warm Southern Air Masses

The Meteorology Department at the Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research at University of Anbar announced satellite weather forecasts for April. Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Jassam Mukhlif, a climate expert and head of satellite weather forecasting, indicated that weather models show a variation in weather patterns in Iraq at the beginning of April. The country is expected to experience a spring transition, with northern lows clashing with warm southern air masses. Rain is expected in the north, while the south remains sunny and hot.

Northern Region (Mosul, Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Kirkuk):

From April 1st to 10th, rainfall activity is expected in the northern region, accompanied by thunderstorms, due to the influence of a Mediterranean low-pressure system centered over Syria and Turkey. The northern region lies within its extension. Maximum temperatures will range between 17-20°C, and minimum temperatures between 7-13°C. While temperatures will be relatively stable, rain will be frequent at the beginning of the period (April 1st-10th), followed by improved conditions. The northern region will be affected by incoming low-pressure systems centered over Syria and Turkey, bringing clouds and intermittent rain with moderate temperatures.

Central Region (Baghdad, Anbar, Karbala):

This region is transitional, affected by a mix of air masses. The impact of low-pressure systems will be weaker compared to the northern region from Thursday to Saturday. Most days will be sunny, with some cloud cover towards the end of this period. The maximum temperature in Baghdad will gradually rise from 23°C to 30°C, with minimum temperatures ranging from 12°C to 20°C. In Ramadi, the maximum will range from 21°C to 26°C and the minimum from 11°C to 16°C. This region is affected by a mix of air masses and is not strongly influenced by northern low-pressure systems, resulting in generally stable weather with a gradual increase in temperature.

Western Region (Rutba, Al-Qaim, and Northern Anbar):

The chance of rain increases in the northern parts of Anbar from Thursday to Saturday. The rain will be intermittent and scattered, followed by mostly sunny weather with clear stability. Temperatures will range from 19°C to 25°C and from 9°C to 16°C. The desert nature of these areas leads to greater temperature fluctuations between day and night.

Southern Region:

This region is affected by warm maritime air masses coming from the Arabian Gulf, which explains the stable temperatures at high levels and the near absence of rain. Sunny and stable weather will prevail with some scattered clouds. As for the temperature, cities like Basra and Nasiriyah are experiencing a gradual increase in maximum temperatures from around 26°C to 30–31°C, while minimum temperatures range between 15°C and 20°C.
