A joint research team from the Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre - University of Anbar and Malaysian, Emirati and Iraqi universities completed a scientific study and published a research in a reputable scientific journal classified within the Clarivate Scientific Publishing Complex (Q1), the study tagged: (A Multi-Functional Genetic Algorithm-Neural Network Model for Predicting Suspended Sediment Loads)
The team that completed the study included researchers from the Upper Euphrates Basin Developing Centre - University of Anbar, namely the instructor Dr. Haitham Abdul Mohsen Afn, and Prof. Dr. Ammar Hatem Kamel, in addition to researchers from the University of the UKM in Malaysia, the University of (Sunway) Malaysia, the University of (INTI) Malaysia, the National Centre for Water and Energy, and Al Ain University from the United Arab Emirates, with a researcher from Al-Maaref University and Future University.
The research is published in the journal ((Water Resources Management Journal)) indexed within the Clarivate first quartile with an impact factor ((impact factor = 3.9)) and ((Cite score = 7.4)). The research deals with the topic of modelling sediments in rivers using artificial intelligence techniques. The innovator also addresses the challenge of accurately predicting suspended sediment loads (SSL) in rivers, which is a key factor affecting flood management, mitigating the effects of drought, and providing clean water, and offers a model based on genetic algorithm and neural network (GA-NN) to predict suspended sediment loads, based on water and sediment discharge data.
This research highlights the importance of advanced computational models in facing environmental challenges and improving water resources management strategies, and this comes within the new research lines at the centre ((Artificial intelligence techniques and applications in water resources management)) and in implementation of the university's strategic plans and the centre within Vision 2030 to achieve sustainable development goals.
