Project to rehabilitate degraded lands and increase biodiversity in Anbar province

Two researchers from the Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research / University of Anbar participated in the meeting held by the Anbar Environment Directorate to discuss the project to rehabilitate degraded lands and increase biodiversity in Anbar Governorate within the Global Environment Facility (GEF8) project, and they are Assistant Professor Dr. Muneer Naji Ahmed, and Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Jassam Mikhlif, the meeting that was held on Tuesday, 21/1/2025, at the directorate's headquarters, in the presence of a number of members of the team formed from government and research institutions in the relevant province of Anbar.
During the meeting, a detailed review of the areas to be built on the project was presented by the official of the Natural Ecosystems Division in the Directorate, Eng. Namariq Dawood, which included an extensive discussion of the importance of the project in rehabilitating degraded lands and increasing biodiversity in the region, and the importance of establishing and developing a number of projects, including the establishment of agricultural oases in the Anbar desert through the cultivation of drought-resistant trees, the establishment of fodder farms and breeding projects for animal species, especially those threatened with extinction.
During the meeting, the Director of Anbar Environment, Eng. Qais Najeh Abed, stressed the need for continuous cooperation with the relevant authorities and the local government in the province, stressing the positive aspects accompanying the launch of the project, which are to mitigate the effects of climate change, enhance livelihoods, reduce migration due to drought, and provide opportunities for communities to flourish in protected areas, as well as achieving part of Iraq's commitments to declare 30% of Iraq's biodiversity areas as nature reserves by 2030.
