A Scientific Workshop Entitled: The Role of Water in Ancient Civilizations

The Human Resources Development Department at the Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research, in collaboration with the Continuing Education Center at the University of Anbar, organized a scientific symposium named: “Water – The Force That Shaped History and Its Role in Building Ancient Civilizations (Mesopotamia as a Model).”

The seminar highlighted the vital role of water as the lifeblood of human progress, showing how it shaped the course of history and laid the foundations of civilizations across time. The seminar, presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Omar Yaseen Nida and Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Taha Yaseen, took place on Thursday, January 8, 2026, in the center's main hall. It targeted researchers, academics, and specialists in all aspects of water studies and the Upper Euphrates region. The seminar covered the following topics:

  • The Philosophy of Water and Civilizational Development
  • Why Water?
  • Water in Civilizations Ancient (Overview)
  • Case Study: The Civilization of Mesopotamia
  • Innovation of Irrigation Techniques (Hydraulic Engineering)
  • Water in Ancient Iraqi Legal and Political Thought
  • The Sanctity and Theology of Water among the Ancient Iraqis
  • Lessons Learned for the Future from the Experience of Water Use among the Ancient Iraqis
  • Concluding Message, which stated that “The historical experience of Mesopotamia represents a global model in hydraulic management; as it succeeded in adapting the harsh environment and transforming it into a sustainable agricultural society through the combination of scientific knowledge and the legislative system?" Therefore, invoking this heritage is not merely a remembrance of the past, but rather an inspiration drawn from the foundations of civilizational advancement and a source of intellectual impetus to solidify the nation's standing and reclaim its pioneering role, drawing upon the very essence of this land.

This panel discussion is part of a series of scientific events organized by the Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research to serve researchers, specialists, and postgraduate students. The Center affirms its commitment to continuing to organize such events, which contribute to developing researchers' skills and raising the level of scientific research according to rigorous scientific standards.
