In a move to enhance food security, a scientific workshop explores the use of biotechnology to address climate challenges
2026-03-12
In its ongoing efforts to address increasing environmental challenges, the Upper Euphrates Center for Sustainable Development Research, in coordination with the Continuing Education Center at Anbar University, organized a specialized scientific workshop on "Agricultural Biotechnology Applications to Improve Plant Tolerance to Environmental Stresses."
The workshop, presented by researcher in the Department of Natural Resources Development (Instructor Dr. Hanin Shartouh Sharqi), on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, witnessed a distinguished attendance of academics and researchers interested in developing the sustainable agricultural sector.
The workshop focused on the essential role that biotechnology plays as a strategic tool in developing crops to resist environmental stresses (abiotic stresses) such as salinity, drought, and high temperatures, as well as enhancing plant immunity against pests and diseases.
During the workshop, Dr. Sharqi reviewed the latest scientific technologies used globally, including:
- Genetic engineering and molecular markers: to identify and isolate genes responsible for resistance traits.
- Plant tissue culture: to produce pure and adapted strains in controlled environments.
- Biological control: employing beneficial microorganisms to stimulate plant growth under harsh conditions.
The workshop ends with a set of recommendations submitted to the relevant authorities, calling for the need to intensify material and moral support for applied research in the field of biotechnology, and to activate a genuine partnership between academic institutions and the field agricultural sector.
The participants also emphasized the importance of raising technical awareness among farmers and students to ensure the adoption of modern scientific solutions that guarantee resource sustainability and achieve food security amidst the accelerating climate changes the region is experiencing.
At the conclusion of the event, the Upper Euphrates Center affirmed its commitment to continuing to hold such high-quality activities that contribute to translating knowledge from theoretical frameworks into practical applications, serving the community and sustainable development in the country.
